I have to admit, when I first heard about Occupy Wall Street, I was doubtful that it would go anywhere. Thankfully, I was wrong! It’s been amazing what this effort has accomplished in such a short time frame. We’re shifting the whole national narrative about wealth and power. America is rediscovering collective action. Possibility is in the air.
I hope that ten years from now we’ll look back to this moment and see it as a critical turning point; as the (re)birth of a powerful broad-based grassroots movement for social and economic justice and civic participation; as the point in time when we started to win.
Toward that end, we have a lot of work ahead of us. We’re up against deeply entrenched power and privilege. Winning will not be easy.
My name is Jonathan Matthew Smucker. I’m on the ground doing what I can to help out at Occupy Wall Street here in lower Manhattan. I’m starting this blog to share some of my reflections and practical organizing tools about how to engage this opening as strategically as possible. I welcome your comments and collaboration.
